Morgan Dollar Silver Coin

Call for Price

Minted from 1878 to 1921, the Morgan Dollar was authorized by the Bland-Allison Act in reaction to the massive quantities of silver being mined from the Comstock Lode in Nevada. The coin is named after its designer, U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan. Today the Morgan Dollar is one of the most collected coins in U.S. history.

On the obverse of the coin is Lady Liberty’s profile, surrounded by 13 stars representing the 13 original colonies and the words “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” which translate to “Out of many, one.” This Latin phrase refers to the union formed by the separate U.S. states. “LIBERTY” is displayed on Lady Liberty’s coronet.

The reverse of the Morgan Dollar has an eagle, standing tall and stern, wings spread, partly surrounded by a u-shaped wreath. In the eagle’s talons are arrows and an olive branch. Encircling the coin are the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the denomination “ONE DOLLAR.” “In God We Trust” is placed between the bird’s upright wings.

As the heaviest and largest silver coin to be produced after the Civil War, the Morgan Dollar was minted until the U.S. government’s supply of silver ran out. The Pittman Act recalled over 270 million silver dollars for melting. Three years later, the Morgan Dollar would be minted for one more year until the Peace Silver Dollar took its place.
