$2.50 Liberty Gold Coin

Call for Price

Wanting uniformity among gold coins, U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht created a version of his $10 Liberty Gold Coin and coronet design for the $2.50 Liberty Gold Coin. Currently, the coronet design stands as the longest uninterrupted use of a U.S. coin design without a major design change.

On the obverse of the $2.50 Liberty Coin, you will find a profile of Lady Liberty, surrounded by 13 stars representing the original 13 colonies. The issue date sits under the profile. The word “LIBERTY” appears on her crown.

On the reverse is an eagle with wings spread almost to the coin’s rim, with arrows and an olive branch clutched in its talons. A shield with stars and stripes covers the bird’s prominent chest. Also on the reverse encircling the eagle are the words: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the mint mark and the coin’s denomination.

From 1840 through 1907, $2.50 Liberty Gold coins were minted in various locations. The Philadelphia Mint produced these coins every year of circulation. In New Orleans, Dahlonega, Georgia and Charlotte, $2.50 Liberty Gold coins were minted pre-Civil War. In 1848, coins were produced at the request of the California Military Governor, and these coins were stamped with CAL to distinguish them. The San Francisco mint produced these coins from 1857 to 1907.
