1923 Graded $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Coin

Call for Price

One of the most beautiful and desired coins in the world is the $20 Saint-Gaudens, named for its designer who was an American sculptor also responsible for the $10 Indian Head Coin.

Lady Liberty is featured on the coin’s obverse, striding forward carrying an olive branch in her left hand, and a torch in her right. The sun’s rays are behind her and the word “LIBERTY” is above. The coin’s date appears at the bottom right, and the Capitol building on the coin’s left. Outlining the design are 48 stars, representing the states of the union.

The coin’s reverse features a beautiful eagle in flight above the sun, the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS” at top. After a public outcry, the words “IN GOD WE TRUST” were added below the eagle in mid-1908. President Theodore Roosevelt thought the phrase was blasphemous on a coin that could migrate into bars, brothels, and gambling houses.

Around 22 early Saint-Gaudens coins were made, though not intended for circulation. These featured a much higher relief, making them look more like a medal. One of these coins later became one of the highest value coins to be sold. The $20 Saint-Gaudens was then released in 1907 after being struck in flat relief.

Professional grading services, like NGC or PCGS, grade coins based on criteria such as luster, coloration, and surface preservation. Grades range from 1-70, with 70 being a perfect coin on the Sheldon scale. After grading, coins are carefully sealed in a tamper-proof acrylic slab, preserving and protecting them. Please call to inquire about the coin grades we offer and pricing.
