1912 Graded $10 Indian Head Gold Coin
Call for Price
Upon President Theodore Roosevelt’s inauguration, he was dissatisfied with the inaugural medal, so American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed a new medal. The new medal received critical acclaim, inspiring Roosevelt to turn his attention to the nation’s coins. Saint-Gaudens was commissioned to create new coin designs, the $10 Indian Head being one of two new designs.
This 1912 $10 Indian Head features Lady Liberty on the obverse, wearing an Indian war bonnet with “LIBERTY” on the headband. The top displays an arc of 13 stars, representing the original 13 colonies, with the coin’s date below Lady Liberty’s profile.
The coin’s reverse features a defiant eagle perched on an olive branch, with “IN GOD WE TRUST” on the coin’s left. Above and to the right are the words, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in reference to the union formed by the 13 separate states. Above the eagle is “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” while the coin’s denomination sits below the eagle.
One of the most beautiful features of this coin is the 46 raised stars on the coin’s edge, representing the states of the Union. Two more stars were added in 1912, for Arizona and New Mexico.
Graded coins are those that have been specially assessed by a professional grading service. Grades range from 1-70 on the Sheldon scale, with 70 being a perfect score. Coins are graded on criteria such as surface preservation, luster, coloration, sharpness of the strike and visual appeal. After coins are graded, they are sealed in a slab that is tamper-proof, preserving and protecting the coin indefinitely. Please call for more information on coin grades and pricing.
